The Early Intervention Programme focuses on training and education of visually impaired babies and toddlers with their parents and families on how to cope with the trauma of being born blind or sight loss at an early age. Supportive and educational services are designed to assist parents in minimizing the effect of visual impairment on their child’s development.
The practice of Vision Surveillance and Vision Screening ensures that young children have every possible chance to reach their full potential by the time they are adult. Assessment of monocular visual acuity pass/fail criteria to a specific standard is undertaken, which indicates a level of acceptable vision.
The Fiji Society for the Blind in partnership with Fiji Community Development Programme (FCDP) funding towards vision screening, raises all awareness in schools, rural and remote villages and settlements around the islands of Fiji and conducts vision screening to identify common eye diseases such as trachoma, cataracts & presbyopia to eliminate avoidable blindness and vision loss.
Ignorance is the major cause of Blindness. The Society’s work extends to preventing blindness through education and training on eye care. This invaluable programme is a joint partnership between the society and the Ministry of Health and extends to all districts of Fiji, especially the rural areas, through the Community Based Rehabilitation Programme.
The Fiji Society for the Blind was established in the year 1970 by public support led by the Suva Rotary Club, just after Fiji gained its independence.
